Public Affairs Reporting: Durant City Council
Libraries are the main sources students attend when they need to study, go to tutoring, or to just print off a paper. Not a lot of people these days are interested in checking out books, but there is more to a library than just books and encyclopedias. Libraries have been a main source to students for years, and it will most likely continue to be like that for eternity.
The City of Durant’s public library received the George Pendleton Trust award, which is thousands of dollars and a steady income. The award sounds like a great deal, but there are restrictions that keep from helping them to meet certain standards for a public library. Since there are limits on books, there is money restricted only for purchasing books.
While City Council of Durant accepts a petition for the trust, many opportunities approach with tons of resources that could help better the library. It’s only because of the money restriction being used towards books and doing whatever they believe will improve the library.
It doesn’t matter who decides where the money goes and where it doesn’t go. What matters is that wherever the money goes, it’s still going to be worth it because the public will have the biggest influence on how the library will be used.
